Fox Mask #1: Gray Fox
Description
My first mask was meant for a LARP in Great Britain called Maelstrom where I'd be playing a member of the Mokosh race.
Because this was my first mask it was quite an experiment, and I had to redo certain parts of it. Originally, it was meant to be covered completely with fur. When I found out that trimming the fake fur that I used wasn't possible (it looked too unnatural) I decided to add the fur only to the top and sides of the head, giving the impression of hair. Since I had only made a rough layer of papier-mâché I had to add a second, smoother layer to it.
The underskull is a standard plastic theatre mask, with carboard pasted on top and on the sides so that there would be extra surface for fur and ears. The ears and the nose are styrofoam cones that I sculpted into the right form and glued to the underskull. On top of that came the paper-mâché layer. The paint job is a plain layer of acrylic, finalized with a matte spray for the face and ears, and a glossy spray for the nose. In retrospect, a pattern might have been nicer than a plain layer, though painting is a skill I haven't yet mastered.
